The climate in Santander

Santander has a humid temperate Atlantic climate. The seasons are distinct here. The average annual temperature in Santander is 16.8 °C. In the summer months, this rises to 22 °C. During the day, however, it can sometimes be 30 °C or warmer. The average water temperature is also similar at 16.5 °C, which is cooler than average compared to the Mediterranean coast. In the summer months, however, it rises to 18 °C. On average, it rains 14.4 days per month, making Santander one of the rainier cities in Spain. The sun shines for about 5 hours per day, but varies considerably throughout the year. The humidity in Santander is considered pleasant by most people and does not have extreme values.

Attractions in Santander

Santander has few historic buildings to offer, as it was extensively devastated in a major fire in 1941, but still has some attractions. In addition to the long sandy beaches in and around Santander, visitors particularly appreciate the diverse events that regularly take place in the Centro Botín, among other places. Several pretty summer residences and aristocratic villas are scattered around the city, and there is no casino missing. The beautiful garden Jardines de Pereda creates an attractive transition between the city center and the beach. Excursions by boat to the bay of Santander are also popular. In the center, the main sights can be reached quickly from the Plaza de Cañadío with the church of Santa Lucía. Last but not least, an excursion to the peninsula of La Magdalena, where the Spanish king Alfonso VIII had a summer residence built, is worthwhile. Several circular paths and viewpoints provide a varied walk and panoramic views of the coast.
